International Development Question: Human Rights in Malawi

I was alarmed to hear reports that 2 men, Cuthbert Kulemela and Kelvin Gonani, had recently been arrested in Malawi for consensual sex. During parliamentary questions in chamber yesterday I questioned International Development Minister Justine Greening on the UK Government's response to this human rights issue- you can watch the exchange here: Malawi question

I'm disappointed by this regressive step from Malawi, which had relaxed its anti-gay laws under the previous President. Scotland has a longstanding historic connection to the southern African nation, with the two-way ties strengthened in recent years by the Scotland-Malawi partnership, a fantastic model for international development. I urge the UK Government to express these concerns to the Malawian Government about persecution of gay people.
